As fireworks crackle and flags fly, this Fourth of July weekend has me reflecting—not just on what we’re celebrating, but on the long and winding story of the freedom we enjoy.
I’m out of town this week, spending time with family—a gift I don’t take for granted. Freedom makes moments like this possible. And for my family, that freedom has come at great cost.
- My grandfather served in the Korean Conflict.
- My great uncle gave his life in World War II.
- My brother served in the Army.
- And today, my sister-in-law serves overseas in the U.S. Air Force.
Their stories—and the stories of millions more—remind us that freedom isn’t automatic. It’s preserved by sacrifice, courage, and deep love for others.
This week, I also began reading Undaunted Courage, the story of Lewis and Clark’s expedition westward. Interestingly, they officially began their journey on July 5, 1803—just one day after the nation’s 27th birthday.
In a sense, they were continuing the work of independence—not through war, but through discovery. They ventured into the unknown, charting a new course for a young country full of potential.
We often think of freedom as a finish line, but it’s also a frontier.
Something to be stewarded, explored, expanded—for the good of others.
And for those of us who follow Jesus, that includes the freedom we have in Him.
“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.”
— 1 Peter 2:16
On this Independence Day, I’m grateful.
Grateful for a nation that values liberty.
Grateful for family members who’ve served.
Grateful for the men and women who still stand watch today.
And most of all, grateful for a Savior who offers eternal freedom—freedom that no government can give and no enemy can take away.
Freedom is a gift we didn’t earn—and a responsibility we dare not ignore.
Reflection Question
This week, ask yourself:
How am I using my freedom?
Am I living for myself—or for something greater?
Who can I serve with the liberty I’ve been given?
Enjoy your celebration—and don’t forget to pause and give thanks.
Happy Fourth of July.
